Bike lane perspectives: a UK view

The following links about bike lanes are from the UK, and some caution must be used when converting the UK experience to Australia, and here in Toowoomba.

However, there is considerable food for thought even with that qualification.

What is a Bicycle Advisory Committee?

The Toowoomba BUG supports the creation of a BAC to assist the new Toowoomba Regional Council get the right policies in place for cycling.

We recently attended a Bicycle Queensland seminar on the role of BUGs and learned first hand how difficult it can be dealing with some councils without a BAC, and how difficut it can be for councils to be sure they are dealing with the wide and varied needs of cyclists.

A BAC is needed here to ensure all the major government departments, and all the major local stakeholders, are sitting around the same table, at the same time, implementing the whole range of cycling policies, in unison, and correctly.

Government policies across a range of areas must be dealt with by councils at the same time.

Volunteer cycling groups, such as this BUG, must be utilised to ensure on-the-ground cycle needs are being heard and met.

Read about the value of BACs here:

What is a BUG?

A Bicycle User Group (BUG) is a group of cyclists who have a common interest in improving riding conditions in their community. The groups have detailed local knowledge which makes them effective in working with planners and administrators to improve conditions for bike riding.
